We got an inside look at how United States Marine Corps recruits train on a challenging "confidence course" during boot camp. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days in 2019 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he observed recruits at various stages of boot camp. This aspect of training inside Leatherneck Square involves intimidating obstacles like the "Stairway to Heaven," "Tough One," and "Slide for Life" to physically and mentally test the recruits. Their first taste of the course is on the 12th day of boot camp, and they get a second chance during week nine or 10. Presented by AMEX Before the pandemic, Nom Wah Tea Parlor had two-hour wait times and lines out the door. But come 2020, on its 100th anniversary, the oldest dim sum restaurant in NYC's Chinatown temporarily closed and lost 80% of its business. To survive the pandemic, the team had to get creative. They pivoted to making and delivering frozen dumplings. Today, chefs make 20,000 dumplings a week that are frozen for delivery or pickup or served fresh for takeout. Business Insider visited the historic dumpling spot to see how these pivots have helped save Nom Wah. Editor's note: At 0:57, the orange chicken is labeled incorrectly. In May, the Venezuelan government released photos and video footage showing a ragtag group of men who appear to have been captured by security forces in a village on the country's northern coast. According to President Nicolás Maduro, eight people were killed and dozens more were captured in what he said was an attempt to kidnap him and remove him from the country. Among the captured men were two American former Green Berets, who were reportedly hired to train men for the operation in Colombia. In what the Venezuelan government called "confession videos" released by state-controlled media, the two Americans said that they were working on behalf of the U.S. government, specifically under the orders of President Donald Trump. However, President Trump, along with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, flatly denied any American involvement in the plot. Business Insider spoke with the brother of captured American Luke Denman, who points out red flags raised by the footage. Denman, along with a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department, suggests that the men in the footage were used as pawns in a false flag operation staged by the Venezuelan government. Along with Mark Denman and the U.S. State Department, Business Insider spoke with other key figures to understand what aspects of this complex story are rooted in fact, and what aspects may have been constructed by the Venezuelan government. How Trump Lost Control Of The Coronavirus Pandemic, Told As A Motion Comic
28 dager siden
The United States has recorded over 200,000 deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic. Months of an uncontained coronavirus pandemic have left the US in far worse shape than other countries, like South Korea. President Donald Trump tested positive for coronavirus on October 2, 2020. The US practically invented the playbook of how to confront pandemics. Presidents - like George W. Bush and Barack Obama - worked to ensure that if a pandemic came, there would be an effective plan to respond. Yet while other countries used that playbook, and succeeded in doing what was necessary to get the coronavirus under control, the Trump administration threw out the plan. To help Americans understand precisely what went wrong, Insider hired the comics creators Anthony Del Col and Josh Adams to depict the Trump administration's course of action that put America into this position. Editor's note: The first person officially diagnosed with coronavirus in South Korea was a 35-year-old Chinese woman, not a South Korean woman as stated in the video. Insider regrets the error. Why Argan Oil Is So Expensive | So Expensive

Argan oil can cost as much as $300 per liter, making it the world’s most expensive edible oil. Just 20 years ago, however, the production of argan oil was isolated to villagers in Morocco, who sold it locally for as little at $3 per liter. But since then, the formation of women-run cooperatives has transformed the production into a billion-dollar industry. With the help of the cooperatives, the traditional skills held by the Amazigh women has created some financial independence in a male-dominated society However, the women normally make less than $220 a month - below Morocco's recommended national minimum wage. So why has argan oil suddenly gained such popularity? And what makes it so expensive? We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new freshmen, known as "Swabs," at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Day one marks the beginning of "Swab Summer," a challenging seven-week basic training program all future cadets are required to complete. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all swabs entered a 14-day restriction-of-movement period, known as ROM. According to the Academy’s superintendent, all 271 swabs tested negative for COVID-19. Their training officially began on day 15, which included a physical fitness exam, haircuts, sailing lessons, and drill practice on the Academy's Parade Field. Training is overseen by the Cadre, a group of juniors tasked with leading the swabs through the seven-week program. New York City has the biggest police budget of any city in the United States. In 2020, the New York Police Department spent $6 billion. But the true cost of the police is well above $10 billion a year. Most of that goes to uniformed officers' salaries, pension, and overtime. As police budgets have risen, the extra policing hasn't necessarily led to less crime. Instead, record-high settlements in police misconduct cases, unconstitutional policing policies, and high-profile deaths of Black New Yorkers have called the budget into question. Following the death of George Floyd, New Yorkers took to the streets, calling for a $1 billion cut to the 2021 NYPD budget. But the real cuts amounted to only about $420 million. Hand-harvested Icelandic sea salt could cost you more than 30 times the price of table salt. Housed in one of the most remote and coldest locations in the country, Saltverk salt factory produces 10 metric tons of salt each year. But there’s one other thing that’s unique about the way it’s processed: Everything is powered entirely by geothermal energy. Unlike processed rock salt, the sea minerals remain in the crystals - but these are only a tiny percentage of the final product. The final result is very minimally processed, flaky sea salt from clear Icelandic waters. The use of tear gas during the recent protests surrounding police misconduct in the United States has reignited the debate about the legality of its use on large assemblies. Classified as a "less-lethal weapon," tear gas has become a weapon of choice for law enforcement officers ever since it first emerged during World War I. Today, the less-lethal weapons industry generates billions of dollars each year, and tear gas products reportedly comprise about 25 percent of the entire industry. Although tear gas is illegal in the context of warfare, it remains legal for use by law enforcement for riot control purposes. The legality of its use has been debated for nearly a century. While the debate continues, tear gas continues to be used on protests in the United States and around the world. 40 million Americans filed for unemployment during the pandemic, but billionaires saw their net worth increase by half a trillion dollars. This isn’t the first time billionaires have seen gains while others dealt with loss, and it tends to tie back to two things. First, the government disproportionately gives more aid to banks and corporations. Then, when the stock market bounces back, the unequal bailouts mean that the wealthy still have money on hand to invest and thus profit, while the middle and lower classes do not. Wealth-friendly tax laws and loopholes then keep those billionaires at the top. Knowing all of this, some are advocating for policies to help level the playing field and create change. We got an inside look at how United States Army infantry soldiers train for combat in urban environments during their 22-week One Station Unit Training. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence inside the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, GA, where future infantry soldiers engage in training known as Military Operations in Urban Terrain, or MOUT. A 200-square-meter compound built to resemble a European village serves as the MOUT training site, where soldiers spend up to 60 hours in training during their time at Fort Benning. One of the key components of MOUT is learning a mobile combat formation known as the “Rolling T.” The formation is designed for a four-soldier squad to navigate a hallway or corridor, and adapt when faced with corners or intersections where an unseen threat may exist. According to Staff Sgt. Dewayne Waugh, the formation is applicable wherever the Army is tasked with conducting search and clearance operations in urban environments. According to one former Army soldier who spoke to Business Insider, avoiding civilian casualties is one of the biggest takeaways during MOUT training. Role players pretending to be civilians are used to ensure the mission objectives are accomplished without harming bystanders. Cuban cigars hold a reputation as the world's most opulent tobacco product. A box of good quality Habanos can cost thousands of dollars. Every hand-rolled Cuban cigar goes through about 500 manual tasks from seed to cigar. But over the last 25 years, cigars made in other countries in the Caribbean and Central America have become comparable in quality, consistency, and cost. Some experts suggest that up to 95% of all Cuban cigars in the US, which hasn't allowed the import of Cuban cigars since the 1962 embargo, are actually counterfeit. So why are Cuban cigars so desirable? And is that why they're so expensive? The risk of becoming exposed to the COVID-19 coronavirus increases in some cases and decreases in others. As more parts of the country start reopening during the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, Dr. Susan Hassig, an epidemiologist at Tulane University, shares how to think about managing the risk of everyday activities for yourself. She recommends analyzing situations by looking at the distance you will be able to maintain with others, the diversity of households in the area, and the duration of your activity and interactions. All of this can change if you are high risk or interacting with someone who is high risk, as even moderate situations can lead to major consequences. President Trump's coronavirus task force press briefings are known for his tense interactions with reporters. We asked Kent Zimmermann, a legal analyst and former attorney, to reveal courtroom tactics that lawyers would use in similar situations. One approach is treating the president as a so-called "hostile witness." However, the stock market remains open for business, and it has seen historically dramatic swings in the last eight weeks. For those fortunate enough to receive a steady paycheck amid the crisis, now might be a good time to cautiously consider investing in equities. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan talked to two world-renowned financial experts: Ellevest CEO and former Citigroup CFO Sallie Krawcheck, and Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at NYU Aswath Damodaran. He asked them for guidance about investing in equities, managing longterm accounts like 401(k) plans, and advice for people who received stimulus checks from the U.S. government. Flanagan also talked to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a multimillionaire known for sports gambling who decided to try day trading in the stock market after the coronavirus cancelled all sports leagues. At the time of the interview, Portnoy told Flanagan that he had lost over $700,000. While President Donald Trump says the economy will take off like a rocket when social-distancing guidelines end, the Congressional Budget Office estimates an unemployment rate of 9% at the end of 2021. In fact, economists think the US might already be at 15% unemployment. With parts of the economy like restaurants, sporting events, movie theaters, and concerts unlikely to be able to go back to 100% capacity for months or longer, it may be hard to bring the unemployment level back down to full employment rapidly. Why Spacesuits Are So Expensive | So Expensive

NASA's current fleet of spacesuits was built in 1974, and each was reported to cost between $15 million and $22 million. Today, that would be about $150 million. Having not built any new mission-ready extravehicular suits since then, NASA is running out of spacesuits. In fact, NASA is down to just four flight-ready EVA suits. Since 2009, NASA has invested more than $200 million in spacesuit development, recently unveiling the xEMU prototype for its Artemis program, which plans to take humans back to the surface of the moon by 2024, with a view to eventually go to Mars. With that goal fast approaching - and the number of existing spacesuits dwindling - NASA engineers face a new kind of space race. Meanwhile, commercial space company Final Frontier Design is developing its own EVA spacesuits and plans to build new units at much lower costs than NASA. So, why has it taken so long for new spacesuits to be built? And what makes them so expensive? As COVID-19 spreads around the world, some countries' timelines look different from others. With a combination of contact tracing, testing, and isolating cases, along with other physical distancing policies, places like South Korea were able to reduce the size of its coronavirus outbreak and flatten the curve. But many other countries have seen the number of new cases grow exponentially. Countries that didn't start testing and tracing early have had a harder time reducing the number of daily new coronavirus cases. In 1999, President Clinton ordered the formation of the Strategic National Stockpile - a series of warehouses in secret locations filled with medical supplies and personal protective equipment to be used in case of a natural disaster or health emergency. Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Stockpile has already distributed about 90% of its resources, according to federal officials. We asked the Department of Health and Human Services why the Stockpile didn't have enough resources to meet the demand for PPE required by healthcare professionals fighting COVID-19 on the front lines. According to a HHS spokesperson, the Stockpile wasn't designed for an event of this magnitude. However, thanks to billions in newly allocated funds from Congress and private contracts to replenish the Stockpile's warehouses, some much-needed help is on the way. Depending on the stallion, horse semen is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. A gallon of gold-medal-winning Big Star's semen is worth $4.7 million. But that's nowhere near the most expensive! Once it's collected, horse semen can be sold in small tubes called straws, each containing 150 million to 200 million sperm cells. These straws can sell for thousands of dollars. In the horse-breeding world, genetics is king. Wealthy investors are willing to pay high prices for a proven winner's semen, hoping that the resulting foal provides a large return on investment. But even though most stud farms offer guarantees on producing a live foal, commercial and competitive success is still a gamble, even with strong genetics. Each year, 100,000 people apply for a position as a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, but only 3,000 people get the job. That's because it’s much more than being a waitress in the sky. We visited Delta's flight attendant training facility in Atlanta to see how they're trained for emergency evacuations and medical emergencies. The COVID-19 crisis is changing the way future Army soldiers are trained at the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, Ga. As of March 29, six confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been connected to Fort Benning. According to the Army, the patients were not part of training operations. Due to the crisis, some aspects of training that involve physical contact have been suspended, and physical distancing is being applied to exercises that will continue to occur. New medical screenings have been incorporated into the reception of the hundreds of soldiers that arrive every week to begin their training. All visitors are prohibited from attending graduation ceremonies, and recent graduates are being held at Fort Benning for the immediate future instead of being shipped to their new units. We got an inside look at how United States Army recruits are exposed to tear gas during basic combat training. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence inside the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, GA. Recruits are exposed to CS gas, more commonly known as tear gas. Side effects include burning on the skin and in the eyes, and profuse discharge of mucus. While wearing a gas mask, the recruits spend approximately five minutes inside a gas chamber where CS tablets are burned to create the gas. To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus and flatten the curve, many countries are practicing social distancing, or what the WHO is now calling physical distancing. The virus is transmitted via respiratory droplets, so maintaining physical distance from people can help protect you and others. People are staying inside, working from home, and only going out for essential activities. But how long will this period of social distancing last? Unfortunately, no one knows for sure. The answer is complicated, and it partly depends on our actions. The increase in electric vehicles and hybrids on roads has also increased the risk of collision with pedestrians and cyclists. Since we have become used to the sound of engines alerting us to a car's presence, the silence of electric cars has caused safety concerns. To mitigate this risk the U.S. and Europe have passed a new regulation that requires EV's to emit a sound while driving under 18.6 mph or 30 kph to replace the sound of an engine. Automakers like BMW, Volkswagen, and Nissan are working with music composers to design sounds for their EVs. A composer from Man Made Music group guides us through their process of designing the sound for the Nissan LEAF. A few years ago I took my son to get his first pair. Loved them so much its all he wears now. Started to collect them but that got expensive really quick. I still have one pair of nice dress shoes.

Diversity and Tolerance in Hinduism “The ideal function of dharma is to provide a sound, fundamental world-view which correctly orients the individual to the universe and thus, can serve as the basis for an intelligent guide for living.” Hinduism is a religion of freedomComing from almost monolithic culture, Westerners are often amazed at the mind boggling philosophical diversity in India. They are left wondering, what is the binding force that holds them all together. The answer is: ‘Dharma principles’ unite them together. Being liberal and tolerant are its fundamental features. Hinduism, unlike Western religions, does not dogmatically assert that the spiritual evolution is possible only through its own means and not through any other. It clearly acknowledges that there can be several ways to reach the final goal or ultimate truth. For instance, the Rig Veda (I.164.46) explains: Ekam sad; vipra bahudha vadanti. (while Truth is One, the wise describe it in different ways). Even in ancient India, when the influence of Indian culture extended to most of East Asia and to Afghanistan and beyond, the foreign travelers saw just “One India” everywhere, despite so much diversity. Even early Christians and Muslims who had to escape their homeland to avoid ‘religious persecution’ found safe shelter on the Indian soil. They had no difficulty merging in the congenial Hindu society despite their foreign appearance and very different belief system. According to Swami Sivananda, “Hinduism allows absolute freedom to the rational mind of man. It never demands any undue restraint upon the freedom of human reason, the freedom of thought, feeling and will of man. Hinduism is a religion of freedom, allowing the widest margin of freedom in matters of faith and worship. It allows absolute freedom of human reason and heart with regard to such questions as to the nature of God, soul, form of worship, creation, and the goal of life. It does not force anybody to accept particular dogmas or forms of worship. It allows everybody to reflect, investigate, enquire and cogitate.” India is the most tolerant country in the world. - Indian JewsHence all manner of religious faiths, various forms of worship or spiritual practices, diverse rituals and customs have found their place, side by side, within Hinduism; they all coexist and grow in harmony with one another. Of course, if certain people are just following something blindly they are merely wasting their time - and for that they alone are responsible. You can’t expect such freedom and tolerance of diversity in the mono-culturist religious societies, where disagreement or holding divergent view jeopardize your life.

1. Religions are Divisive and Confrontational My gun is bigger than your Gun. So my God is bigger than your God!!When a religion says that it teaches the “Only Truth”, it is giving you the final conclusion. Moreover, a religion divides the humanity into “believers” and “non-believers”. If you believe in our theory you belong to us, else you are alien. Clearly, it sets the stage for confrontation: you are “either with us or against us.” As part of its unspoken political agenda, a religion also ordains the believers to “convert” others into the religion. Thus, there is big conversion industry associated with Christianity and Islam. The conversion sharks employ all types of filthy tricks to lure gullible people into their fold. They particularly hunt for people in need of emotional support, assurance and security. They are the easiest ‘targets’ of missionaries and Mullahs. They normally offer some material and emotional support in exchange for ‘conversion.’ Missionaries are also notorious for staging ridiculous dramas of ‘miracle’ to fool people! Just google to find out how ridiculous they can get. Once the population of Muslims or Christians in any society becomes “politically significant” they start demanding fancy things in the name of religion and, if denied, they pretend persecution! You can easily spot this tendency all over the world. So, whenever they cry persecution, their coreligionist elsewhere in the world become spokespersons of the ‘holy victims’ - this opens a new channel for outside interference in any society. Lately, China has been facing the dirty political game of missionaries who have converted significant numbers in some parts of China. In some other areas with significant population of ‘Muslim converts’, Chinese authorities had to cut their so-called ‘religious freedoms’ to restore social harmony and prevent radicalization.2. Religions are Possessive and Exclusionary Becoming a ‘believer’ means you accept the authority of the religion and its clergy-class. It also means that you can’t ‘believe’ in another religion. Many people say that Islam is even a one way road, you can’t come out alive!3. Religions Need God! Man is the creator of God; it created it as per its mental image.A wise man has famously said: I am not sure whether God created man, but I can definitely say that man created God with all the qualities that he wanted in him!! The concept of God (who sits somewhere ‘up there’ and watches you) is central to the definition of religion; so much so that a “religion” are its followers are married to its God forever!! So, there is a supermanish ‘Allah’ for Muslims Islam and a miracle performing ‘God’ for Christians. There is no place for an atheist in any religion - you can’t be a “Christian atheist” or a “Muslim atheist”. In the not very distant past, when the clergymen ruled the Christian societies and even now in Islamic societies, saying anything against the religion or even trivial criticism could be seen as a serious crime - serious enough to invite imprisonment or execution!Separation of State and Religion Secularism: Commonsense is put above Religion and God!By now it must be clear that rational reasoning has no place in religions; in fact, you have no freedom to think or to draw your own conclusions! This has traditionally pitted religion against Science that demands a free and rational inquiry. Thus, 3-4 centuries ago the Christian West began to realize the restrictive consequences of religious dictates on human thinking. It was the time when scientific discoveries had started to emerge and people needed the freedom to think freely, without fear of punishment by religious authorities, the State. Thus, they dumped the dictatorial theocratic governance in favor of governance based on non-religious broader humanistic principles. This gave birth to ‘secularism’ - separation of Religion and State. Thus, secular Western democracies evolved so that people could think and express freely - they got freedom from clergy dictatorship. Interestingly, while doing so, they were only recognizing the importance of universal ‘Dharma’ principles already in practice in the Indian civilization since ages, without saying soDharma Encourages Free Inquiry Dharma guides human life in the right directionQuite in contrast with foreign born religions, Indian philosophies encourage people to explore themselves and be responsible in deciding what is right for them. There are absolutely no impositions or bondages on people regarding what to believe or not believe. People are squarely responsible for their good and bad actions (karmas) and the ensuing consequences. Thus, they are their own masters. A non-religious society may still be ethical without belief in God (for instance, the Buddhist society), but an adharmic society soon loses its ethical foundation and falls in the hands of corrupt and decaying forces. Dharma is all about ethics and morality. Therefore, all the India born philosophies focus on moral conduct. They can never encourage violence, oppression or misconduct - doing so is adharmic! ‘God’ in Indian Spiritual Philosophies All the India born philosophies are different paramparas (traditions) that originated in the teachings of different enlightened saints - who all basically taught ‘Dharma’ (universal ethics and morality) in different words and languages. When knowledgeable people in India talk of God they may be seeing it as personified in some shape (Saakar) or without form (Niraakar) as cosmic energy that pervades everywhere. Unlike ‘believers’ of religions, they are not constrained to a specific pre-written idea. It is perfectly ‘normal’ to have different views because the ultimate focus is on the conduct and virtuous living. It is also perfectly alright to reject God, for the same reason. After all, a pious atheist is far better than a fanatic theist! Around the world, it is fashionable to wear religious symbols or perform rituals and rites. Indulging in these things without ever questioning them is plain stupidity. This is a reflection of blind faith, visible everywhere, East or West. But it is always nonsensical and and foolish; thus, adharmic. The nature of Dharma is emphasized in this Hindi Doha: “Dharan Kare So Dharma Hai, Varna Kori Baat.” It says - Dharma is Dharma only if it shows up in the conduct, else it is useless empty talk. Dharma described in the scriptures or written in the Books has no meaning unless it is put to practice and experientially realized. It certainly demands consistent hard work on oneself, sincere reflection, investigation, prayers, meditation etc. Mere declaring that you believe in Dharma scriptures doesn’t make you dharmic! Although mere declaration of belief in Bible or Quran is enough to make you a Christian or Muslim! In reality, becoming Dharmic is not easy. This is the VITAL difference between the East and the West, between Dharma and religion!

What if Jesus and Mohammad were Born in India! Since ancient times India has been a land of Yogis, sages and rishis. They were all explorers of universal Truth, in order to come out of pains and sufferings of life. As a result, spirituality and presence of saintly people has been the way of life - as can also be seen from the constructs of indigenous Indian languages. Despite the onslaught of materialism and Western philosophies, even today the Indian psyche longs for spiritual enlightenment. Leading a life of purity is still considered a virtuous goal worth aiming for. Now coming to the imaginary question of what if Jesus and Mohammad were born in India. For one, they would have been respected as saintly people with evolved consciousness and people would have looked towards them also for spiritual guidance. At the same time, they could have preached in far more subtler ways to people of already developed spiritual inclinations. For sure, there would have been two more spiritual traditions in a country in the multitude of diverse philosophies and their followers would be naturally mingling freely with the followers of other traditions. Thus, their teachings certainly would not have been ‘boxed as religions’ - instead the “essence” of their teachings would have only enriched the Dharma atmosphere of India! And, then certainly there would have been no cult of faith identification or faith based discrimination!

There is no prestige, no status, respect and least of all wage which the time and skill, the heritage and history should be due them. The often crippling consequences which follow - how are they recognized.

Who's ever noticed that all officers pins are aligned to the bottom of the pocket on the shirt???? I get a uniform is important but honestly shit like that is personal and no one notices anyways.... If they didn't have the pin maybe but the exact position of it is stupid to control like that... No one gives two shits, they want an identifier and beyond that they don't care if your hair is purple, you're covered in tattoos or are wearing flip flops ... So long as you're helpful, don't waste their time, and know what you're talking about and are polite, no one cares what you have on so long as they know you work there. It's not as "professional" but lets be honest the "professional" world is rather small, and most people aren't professionals nor can be... Kind of hard to be a professional burger maker at fast food restaurants. When are we going to stop pretending things we're not...

Why the fk are they just draining money?!? All of these infrastructure could be used to help the poor, improve the education system and in turn boost profits from their side! It's like buying a house and then just letting it sit there for an entire year when you could lease it to another person. smh.
