The Rise And Fall Of The Mall

5 251
Starting with the opening of the Southland Mall in 1956 malls have been a vaulted piece of Americana for decades. Thousands were built across the country and for a while it seemed they would dominate the American landscape forever, but in recent years they’ve rapidly lost their value. So how did malls go from being a mainstay in American society to a quickly vanishing memory?

I just don’t get some of the comments here that romanticise the malls.
Seriously, what’s so great about hanging out in soulless money-grabbing buildings that you feel sad about kids not doing the same thing?
No, don’t use the “socialising” BS argument. You can socialise literally everywhere!
I also grew up hanging out in malls and in introspect, they do not enrich my life. If anything, they encouraged me to seek nothing but material pleasure. 😖😖
I wish I grew up hanging out in parks and extracurricular clubs instead of malls.

There are way too many malls. Plenty of malls in America have a good amount of attendance. The need for them has simply lessened due to online shopping and other factors, therefore we don't need a new mall every few blocks.

malls could have won! easily if the
1) match all online prices
2) provide friend and amazingly quick service
3) build community events

That's simple, the Republican party is the reason for the decline of the malls. You know why ,tax breaks to the rich and the shipment of jobs overseas .more and more people are becoming poorer and not enough people can afford to go to the mall even to hang out with there friends. No you see the malls are empty and rich folks only go to rich malls they dont frequent malls in the city or in colored neighborhoods .everytime a republican president cheats his way into the White House the price of living skyrockets .I remember back in the mid 1990s kids and teenagers could still afford to go to malls ,but not anymore .they have become unaffordable.

the main anchors stores don’t attract the people most likely to go to the mall- the youth. The youth does not shop at Macy’s.

I remember reading about this before, but in my SAT prep class the guy teaching used the decline of malls as an example and all of the kids went "???!!!" and he said "Oh, sorry, I forgot that you guys are in New Jersey right now" and tried to example that everywhere else malls just aren't it.

I was a true connoisseur of shopping malls back when I wasn’t even able to afford to buy anything there. It made for a great browsing experience and a wonderful hangout spot. As I became a young adult, I would soon work at nearly every mall store at least once. Years after that, I woke up one day and just lost my fascination with being inside of a mall, especially around holiday time where I would see every neighbor I knew who I was trying to avoid. Nowadays, prior to the current pandemic, I could probably count on one hand how often I’ve been to the mall in the last 3 to 4 years.

Scottsdale Fashion Square and Scottsdale Quarter here in AZ are doing well. Chandler fashion center as well. And Arizona Mills.
Hopefully this ends all the dead malls in AZ. We just lost fiesta and metro center. The writing for them has been on the wall for a while.
AZ Mills seems to be thriving with a lot of cars and people inside.

In the USA, racial profiling and running off of teenagers is the reason the mall died. Especially the second one. On an episode of Happy Day, the new owner of Arnolds wanted to run off Fonzy. Arnold explained to the new owner. No Fonzy, means no girls. No girls meant no guys. The malls tried to run off teens and minorities and instead succeeded in running off everyone.

I live 15 minutes from Mall of America aka the biggest mall in the country. Honestly it's not that exciting. They also literally have repeats of stores on opposite sides of the mall. The indoor amusement park is fun when you're a young kid, but as an adult you see how watered down (not to mention expensive) it really is. But really I think online shopping is the biggest cause for the decline of malls.

Its also worth noting that a lot of these malls that start to close down become really dangerous for people to visit. I don't know why, but the mall where I live isn't in a bad area, but inside it's ridiculously dangerous! A lot of stores were closed, but have now reopened. However there's a lot of riff raff, and people are getting shot in there. It used to not be like that.
