Why 1 Million Pigs A Week Could Have Been Euthanized Even During A Meat Shortage | Big Business

When COVID-19 outbreaks closed meat processing plants across the US, a meat shortage and unprecedented meat prices soon followed. With no plants taking animals, some farmers were forced to euthanize their herds. But what exactly caused this break in the supply chain and could the industry have avoided it? Business Insider visits a farm in Minnesota facing this devastating reality and another in California that was able to avoid it altogether.

I see "Angus" T-bone steaks and "Angus" strip steaks selling for $40 USD per pack, most packs have 3 T-bones or 6 strip steaks selling at $40-$50 USD. People that can afford 50 dollars on a pack raw steak definitely don't prepare it in a way that tasteful.. They spend $50 on steaks throw it on a grill, over cook it and be disappointed it eats like a Top Round.

Go vegan and the slaughter houses, actual gas chambers, and abhorrently cruel industries are no more. Imagine how you’d feel if you were another number. 500,000 animals a day; that’s 2.5x the total deaths in the US from COVID...EVERY DAY. Wake up, go vegan

Horrific. Our food chain is already starting to take a hit, I've been noticing it at the local grocery store over the past several weeks, and I KNOW it's only going to get worse.

The big takeaway from this would be, let’s get back to the small farmer vs the big corporation farms, local butcher shops vs huge specialized meat packing plants. The world really doesn’t need huge corporations in order to be successful, we can do it with mom and pop operations as we did in the past

They need to allow private farmers to slaughter their inventory. It’ll lower prices and help eliminate this situation

Imagine the 1m pigs stays at the farm.... 1 pig = 200 bucks, and the cost of it to grow the pigs = 20 bucks. The farmer still earns 180 bucks per pig. If all the 1m pigs are not being sent to the factorys = huge lost for the farmers than in need of feeding the pigs = smaller earning from the pigs but yet doesn’t get sent to the factory = What am I even doing this for

Could the industry not find a way to avoid euthanizing the pigs and send them to some place, preferably, a country, such as Africa or a country where there’s a food shortage?

Aside from the ethical implications, this just goes to show how dependent we are on an industrial supply chain, and any disruption in the chain has ripple effects that hurt plenty of people.

And how poorly designed it is. Maximum efficiency with the least regard to disturbances is not sustainable in any world
